Simone Tomasi, MD, PhD

Psychiatry • Neuroscience • Reproductive Mental Health

Dr. Simone Tomasi is a board-certified psychiatrist bridging European perspective and American innovation. Born and trained in Italy, he brings an intellectual, nuanced, and often darkly humorous approach to modern psychiatric care.

He is the founder of Black Dog Psychiatry, specializing in high-functioning adults with complex mood and personality dynamics. His practice integrates psychodynamic insight with evidence-based pharmacology—rigorous, relational, and tailored to the individual.

Dr. Tomasi serves as an Attending Psychiatrist at Mount Sinai Hospital and faculty at the Icahn School of Medicine, where he directs the Behavioral Science curriculum for medical students.

Active in research on the genetics and neurobiology of mental illness, he remains focused on the intersection of neuroscience and clinical care.

As consulting psychiatrist for CHR New York, he provides comprehensive reproductive mental health evaluations aligned with ASRM guidelines—supporting individuals and couples pursuing IVF, egg donation, and gestational surrogacy with empathy, precision, and ethical clarity.

Who we are

Black Dog Psychiatry is where rigorous clinical thinking meets real-world psychiatry. Founded and led by a clinician and scientist with years of clinical and academic experience, we believe that psychiatry should be as precise as it is personal.

We work with adults navigating life’s complexities—seeking not just symptom relief, but deeper clarity and lasting change. For adults tired of being misdiagnosed, misunderstood, or told to "just breathe”.

In addition to general psychiatric care, we specialize in supporting individuals involved in fertility treatment. Whether you’re undergoing IVF, donating eggs, serving as a gestational carrier, or preparing for parenthood as an intended parent, we provide nuanced, compassionate care at every stage. Our services include emotional support, medication management, and psychiatric evaluations for prospective donors—all in close collaboration with IVF centers.

No fluff. No shortcuts. Just meaningful work, done well.
